Glossary
Memories and laughter are the two key elements that separate animation from all other art. Animation is an exact process by which the majority of editing and story development is done in advance of the cel creation. The inked and painted animation cel has become a collector's item because of its originality, artistic value and historical significance.
Giclee
A giclee (pronounced ji-CLAY) is an individually produced, high-resolution, high- fidelity reproduction done on a printer specially modified for fine art reproduction. Giclees are produced from a digital source of existing artwork. Since many studio's now produce only digital art (For example PIXAR), there is no "original" that can be hung on a wall. Giclees solve that problem, while creating a whole new vibrant medium for art.
Giclees can be printed on any number of media, from canvas to watercolor paper to transparent acetates. Giclees are superior to traditional lithography in several ways. The colors are brighter, last longer, and are so high-resolution that they are virtually continuous tone, rather than tiny dots. The range, or "gamut" of color for giclees is far beyond that of lithography, and details are crisper.
Whilst many places offer a giclee printing service from oil painting reproduction to a picture of your baby's first birthday on canvas, the quality will vary enormously. Colour profiling, the appropriate ink on appropriate material, quality of the source, and the eye of the atelier are all important factors in getting the best result. The one thing we pride ourselves on is the quality of our work. It really is second to none.
